The Commission for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism (CITS) has approved 27 new projects to be financed with 138.3 million euros in the Balearic Islands in the 2023 call for proposals. Of the 27 projects approved, 8 are in Mallorca, with a direct investment of 46.7 million euros.
Two of these are projects presented by the Consell de Mallorca and amount to 3.1 million euros. These are the project for the acquisition of the Castell d’Alaró, which will receive 1.1 million euros in ITS funding, and the construction of the civic road between the Forum of Mallorca and the entrance to Inca, which is endowed with 2 million euros.
Among the projects approved by the Commission is an investment of 20 million euros earmarked for the water cycle, in line with the agreements reached the last Conference of Presidents. Of the 20 million for all the islands, 14.29 million will come to Mallorca via ITS for the Water Pact. This is an investment that will be managed by the Consell and will be passed on to the local councils to guarantee the supply of drinking water to the municipalities, to which the Consell will make a contribution with its own resources that will increase the total amount destined for Mallorca to €20 million. There is also a project to be carried out by the Calvià town council worth 3.53 million euros.
Other projects approved by the Commission include the future Levante corridor, to which 30 million euros will be allocated, and important investments in housing, with 5.8 million euros for the construction of subsidised public housing.
Apart from the 8 approved projects worth 46.7M, Mallorca will indirectly benefit from an investment of 52.48M euros in this call, making a total investment of 99.18€. This is because, in addition to these eight, 14 of the 27 total projects are carried out on more than one island, and therefore also affect Mallorca, where 81% of the actions will have a direct or indirect impact.
All the projects approved for the Balearic Islands comply with the objectives set out in the law governing the Sustainable Tourism Tax and are part of the priorities of the Annual Plan to Promote Sustainable Tourism for the period 2023, which for the first time coincides with the priorities set out in the Balearic Islands 2030 Autonomous Regional Strategic Investment Plan.
The Commission for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism is the body responsible for evaluating and selecting projects that may receive funding from the Fund for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism. It is made up of representatives of the Government, the island councils, the FELIB, social and economic agents, the UIB, the Inter-island Agricultural Council and social, cultural and environmental organisations. The projects to be financed with the 2019 funds have been approved by a large majority of the members of the Commission.
The decision will be submitted to the next Governing Council for ratification.
