The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Vino de la Tierra Isla de Menorca
The production of Vino de la Tierra Isla de Menorca has increased by 46% in 2023 compared to last year. This is the highest production achieved since this quality designation was approved as part of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
This increase follows the trend experienced in recent years in Menorca, where the wine sector has experienced a constant boom in production and sales. Currently, three categories of wine are produced on the island: local wines identified with the IGP Isla de Menorca, local wines with the IGP Islas Baleares, and wine without a geographical designation of quality.
In total, Menorca has a total of 152.5 hectares of vines planted for winemaking (compared to 147 ha in 2022) among the different grape varieties suitable for making wine, with the IGP Vino de la Tierra Isla de Menorca being the category to which most of the grapes harvested in 2023 were destined, with a total production of 325 tonnes (210 tonnes in 2022), obtained from a harvested vineyard area of 84 hectares, and with a final volume of wine produced from this category of 1. 982 hectolitres (in 2022 it was 55 ha and 1,356 hl, respectively). These figures represent an increase of 46% and are the highest achieved since this quality designation was approved.
Thus, in terms of total wine production in 2023, 88.4% was produced as IGP Isla de Menorca, 8.4% as IGP Islas Baleares and 3.2% as wine without a geographical indication of quality. The total wine produced in Menorca was 2,242 hl (compared to 1,950 hl in 2022), an increase of 15%, which is the highest volume since this crop was recovered more than 35 years ago, distributed as follows:
- White wine: 1,120 hl (50%)
- Red wine: 629 hl (28%)
- Rosé wine: 493 hl (22%)
Currently, Menorca has 10 active wineries: Crispín Mariano Vadell; Bodegas Binifadet; Cia. Vitivinícola de Menorca-Sa Cudia; Celler Solano; Vinyes Binitord; Sa Marjaleta; Bodegas Torralbenc Vell, Sa Bodega de Son Cremat, Torralba Agrícola and Domaine Santa Catalina.
It should be remembered that the Consell Insular offers support to the sector through a collaboration agreement with the Menorcan Wine Producers’ Association with the aim of improving knowledge, promotion and marketing. In addition, the Department of Economy and General Services continues to offer the possibility to all the wineries to be present at all the fairs where the institution participates.
Work also continues on the agronomic and oenological study of the grape varieties in order to evaluate their suitability and be able to include them as authorised to produce Island of Menorca Local Wine, as not all the grape varieties planted are currently authorised to produce this category of wine.
