A hundred students from IES Santanyí

A group of 100 students and teachers of IES Santanyí have carried out this week two days of environmental volunteering in the Mondragó Natural Park. Volunteers have been divided into two groups and areas of action to facilitate the work, always coordinated by the staff of the Park. One of the most important tasks has been the planting of fruit trees in the agricultural fence of Ca na Martina, next to the information centre of the Park. In total, about 30 trees have been planted (carob, almond and fig trees).

The Conselleria de Agricultura, Pesca y Medio Natural emphasizes that this action will contribute to maintaining the agricultural estates and recovering the traditional tree crops that have characterized the landscape of the Parc Natural de Mondragó. In addition, it will allow to maintain the mosaic of landscapes of this protected natural space, enriching at the same time its biodiversity. Some of the birds that can be found in the agricultural fences of the Parc and that can be favoured are the kestrel, the sparrow hawk, the common woodpecker, the hoopoe, the flycatcher or the cogujada, among others.

However, behind the beach of ses Fonts de n’Alis, about 100 species typical of the front dune habitats have also been planted, such as beach ryegrass, sea lily and sea holly, and species typical of the area behind the dunes, such as evergreen and juniper, which come from the Menut Forestry Center. The planting of these species, which is part of an integral restoration project of the habitats of community interest of ses Fonts de n’Alis, will mean the conservation of the dune habitats and associated species of community interest within the spaces of the Natura 2000 Network.

It should be noted that the main objective of these environmental volunteer activities with the schools of Santanyí is the promotion, involvement and participation of students and teachers in the conservation tasks of the Mondragó Natural Park.
