La vida es sueño, by Calderón, comes to the Teatre Principal

This version of La vida es sueño is a co-production of Cheek by Jowl, the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico and La Zona. Directed by the historic co-founder of Cheek by Jowl, Declan Donnellan, this production is performed by Ernesto Arias, David Luque, Antonio Prieto, Alfredo Noval, Rebeca Matellán, Prince Ezeanyim, Goizalde Núñez, Irene Serrano and Manuel Moyà, with set and costume design by Nick Ormerod, who has always worked with Donnellan.

It premiered at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville in October 2022 and, since then, has visited numerous Spanish cities where it has received praise from audiences and critics alike.

In the words of its director, “Shakespeare, Sophocles, Calderón… the classics endure because they are always about the present, 400 years ago or now. We work on them because they continue to share life through time. They probe our self-deceptions and our victories, our relationships and our systems, and help us discover what it is to be ourselves”.

Cheek by Jowl’s links with Spain have been consolidated over the years with successive performances of its productions and the creation of connections and collaborations with performers and professionals. After the production of Fuente Ovejuna in 1989 at the National Theatre in London, Cheek by Jowl returns to Spanish literature with the first production in Spanish.

Declan Donnellan founded the company Cheek by Jowl in 1981 with his partner and collaborator Nick Ormerod. Since then, he has been the artistic director and has staged more than 40 productions in more than 400 cities around the world.
