A thousand children of Mallorca celebrate the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace

The Consell de Mallorca celebrates the Day of Nonviolence and Peace in La Misericòrdia. Almost a thousand students from 12 island schools have gathered in the cultural centre this Tuesday, January 30, to say no to violence.

The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained that “the aim is to instill the culture of peace, tolerance and respect to the little ones”. Roca has detailed that the schools that have joined this initiative are La Salle de Palma, Sagrado Corazón de Palma, San Vicenç de Paül de la Vileta, La Milagrosa, CC San Francisco de Asís de Palma, CC Arcangel San Rafel, CEIP Jafudà Crezcas, CEIP Felip Bauçà, CCEI Sol Ixent de Inca, CEIPIEEM Son Serra de Palma, Santísima Trinidad and Instituto de Estudios Secundarios Son Cladera. Among the more than 900 attendees, students of all ages participated: from the first year of primary school to the fourth year of ESO.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, also attended the event and highlighted some words of Gandhi in which he said that “There is no way to peace, peace is the way”.

In addition, three students were in charge of reading the Peace Day manifesto. They explained that “we are citizens of the world and that differences of race, language and ideology should not separate us, but quite the opposite”. Once the manifesto was finished, doves for peace were released.

All these schools received, a few weeks ago, some cards, provided by the Consell de Mallorca, in which a dove of peace was drawn. Yesterday, the schoolchildren have attended the Misericòrdia with the painted cards and a mosaic has been made. In addition, during the event, they have sung the song Hallelujah, Cohen and have snacked on Laccao and Quely snack. Now, once the day is over, an exhibition is being prepared at the cultural center with the students’ drawings.
