World Cancer Day and the International Day of the Child with Cancer

It is estimated that cancer affects 1.5 million people in Spain. Specifically, in 2023, 295,675 cases were diagnosed in the country, 6,511 of which were in the Balearic Islands, and 2,426 people died in the Islands because of this disease. In addition, it is estimated that one in three women and one in two men will develop cancer before the age of 75. For this reason, it is considered a major health problem that requires prevention, research and care measures. In this sense, the Consell de Mallorca stresses the importance of early diagnosis.

Likewise, the insular institution has commemorated the International Day of the Child with Cancer, which takes place on February 15. In the institutional declaration, the Consell de Mallorca stresses the need to help families so that their children have a timely diagnosis and treatment. The incidence of cancer in children is 3% of all cancers and the survival rate is 80%.

For all these reasons, the Consell de Mallorca has agreed to continue promoting research, since it is the way to make cancer a disease that can be prevented and cured. In addition, the Ple of the institution has expressed his support to cancer patients and their families and thanked the work of health professionals, researchers and cancer associations who work tirelessly against this disease.

The 20,880 euros of the case Pas Amics del Camí for social policies

On the other hand, the Ple of the Consell de Mallorca has given account of an extraordinary credit modification so that the 20,880 euros recovered from the corruption case Pas Amics del Camí are destined to the budget of the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS).

During the Ple, the councilor of Social Welfare, Guillermo Sanchez, has been satisfied that the insular institution can recover “the money that belongs to all Mallorcans and allocate it where it is most needed, to social policies”.

The final sentence of the corruption case Pas Amics del Camí declares guilty the first vice-president and councillor of Culture, Joana Lluïsa Mascaró, between 2008 and 2011, of the crimes of prevarication and fraud to the administration for paying 20,880 euros to a related association in violation of the principles of administrative contracting.
