Celebration of the Chinese New Year in Palma

The purposes of the Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), among which are the promotion and projection abroad of the culture of the Balearic Islands and the promotion of the Catalan language, the institution supports the celebration, collaborating in the framework of the activities organized with a musical performance in Catalan as an initiative to promote the use of the Catalan language to other communities, such as the Chinese, and thus to generate social contexts in which newcomers are in contact with the language.

In this year’s edition, the IEB will participate in the performance of RapRural. The band, born in Manacor in 2013, will perform a rap concert that will feature the collaboration of David Li, a member of ACHINIB, who will participate in singing in one of the songs of the group, merging Mallorcan rap and Chinese rap. In addition, Rafel Sastre (Swing), the singer of the group, will collaborate after the concert singing in a well-known Chinese song.

The director of the IEB, Llorenç Perelló, explained that “it is important to establish synergies with the different communities of residents from other places of origin and to be able to spread our language with them”.

This initiative, the result of the work done between the IEB and the Chinese community, more specifically with ACHINIB, brought together hundreds of people who attended the event last year. In addition to participating in this celebration, during the last few years projects have been carried out jointly in the field of leisure and cultural activities to bring both cultures together, such as the organization of visits to the Consolado de Mar, the Lonja and the Cathedral, as well as training in the Catalan language.
