The Conselleria de Agricultura, Pesca y Medio Natural, through the Instituto Balear de la Naturaleza (Ibanat), has put out to tender for the first time the exploitation of a public estate for agricultural and livestock use. It is the public estate of Sa Duaia, owned by Ibanat and located in the Natural Park of the Península de Llevant. It should be emphasized that most of the surface area of this property is of a forestry nature, being the public property with the largest area of reforestation in the Balearic Islands.

In this way, and through public-private collaboration, the proposal aims to obtain a profit in the form of an agricultural product from grazing animals as a tool for land management. In addition, the lease of the farm is associated with the transfer of basic aid rights of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), so that the successful bidder can be a beneficiary from this year, in addition to other lines of aid to which it may apply.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, stressed the importance of establishing links between the Administration and the primary sector to achieve common goals. In this sense, Simonet pointed out that “with this model, we see how elements of the primary sector become forest management tools. On the one hand, we obtain an agricultural product and, on the other, a fire prevention action”.

The contract will have a duration of five years (extendable for two more years) during which the lessee will have to make several improvements to the farm in favor of its conservation and management. In addition, the lessee will have to pay an annual rental fee to compensate for the private use of the land. The deadline for interested parties to submit their bids is February 19, 2024 at 14:00 hours. All the information related to the procedure is available on the Public Sector Procurement Platform (PLACSP), as announced in the BOIB No. 17 of February 3, 2024.

Within the extension of the estate, of almost 500 hectares, in addition to shrub pastures, there are also some enclosures for fodder use and others with nut crops. There is also a diversity of heritage elements, such as dry walls, lime kilns and hunters’ huts, among others.
