The shared management of Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest

The Consell de Govern, at the proposal of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, has approved the signing of the extension of the agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the shared management of marine reserves of fishing interest. This is a collaboration agreement that was formalised in 2020 and has now been renewed until 2028.

The agreement is not contractual and does not involve the direct transfer of funds or financial resources by both parties. It is established to define and regulate the conditions under which both administrations will collaborate in management, to facilitate cooperation and coordination to achieve common objectives more flexibly.

Thus, joint actions will be carried out such as surveillance, research and scientific monitoring, conservation of means and equipment and dissemination and diffusion, as well as specific actions that may arise. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment is responsible for island and local relations, consultation bodies (monitoring commissions) and public information.

It should be remembered that the Balearic Islands are the autonomous community with the most marine reserves of fishing interest at state level, which are managed jointly with the Government of the Balearic Islands because they are formed in inland and outer waters: the RM of Llevant de Mallorca – Cala Rajada and the RM of the island of Sa Dragonera.

However, the Ministry aspires to extend this agreement to other future reserves shared with the State, such as Baix Fondo in Formentera, Tagomago and Bledes in Eivissa, and Sóller in Mallorca.
