The Government extends the coverage of the public television of the Balearic Islands

The Government of the Balearic Islands, through the Balearic Agency for Digitalisation, Cybersecurity and Telecommunications (IB Digital), has extended the coverage of regional television channels to the 700 inhabitants of Sant Vicent de sa Cala, in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja.

Since Friday 9 February, these channels have been added to the national channels that already covered urbanisation, thereby extending the television offer in the area with four new public television channels (IB3, TV3 Cat, 3/24 and SX3/C33) and a new private television channel (Fibwi TV), all in high definition. This is a response to a demand and a historical claim of the residents of this enclave. In addition, soon the residents of this area will also be able to watch Televisión de Eivissa y Formentera (TEF).

National television channels benefit from satellite distribution of their content to the television broadcasting centres. Regional television channels, on the other hand, require terrestrial distribution. Until now, this has made it difficult for regional channels to reach the most remote broadcasting centres. The launch of these channels in Sant Vicent de sa Cala has been possible thanks to the development of terrestrial telecommunications services within the reach of the Balearic Islands Government, thanks to its continued commitment to this sector through the instrumental public body IB Digital.

“It was a clear comparative disadvantage that all these neighbours could not enjoy public television in the Balearic Islands. That is why we have accelerated this process as much as possible to respond to their demands,” explained the Vice President and Minister of Economy, Finance and Innovation of the Balearic Islands Government, Antoni Costa.

The Government will continue to work to improve the coverage of these telecommunications services and other public services, investing and developing services where necessary with the aim of making up for the lack of services that are left unattended by the private sector.
