Scheduled surgical operations in public hospitals increased by 615
Surgical operations programmed in the public hospitals of the Balearic Islands have increased by 615 in the first month of the year. Specifically, 4,797 operations were performed in January 2024, compared to the 4,182 registered in the same period of the previous year. This increase represents a 12.8% increase in programmed surgical activity.
About specialist consultations, the hospital centres recorded a total of 38,521 consultations during January of this year, a figure that represents an increase of 8.9% compared to the 35,039 recorded in January 2023. In this regard, the Health Service has been working for months on different lines of action to improve the waiting lists, such as prioritizing overtime. In the case of outpatient consultations, overtime went from 6,864 consultations in January last year to 8,212 in January this year.
The number of emergencies also increased compared to 2023. While in January last year, a total of 40,602 emergencies were recorded, this year this figure stood at 41,664, an increase of 2.6%.
Health has been working intensively for months on the development of the Integral Approach Plan for Waiting Lists, to reduce the number of patients pending a consultation with a specialist or a surgical intervention and increase the efficiency of the healthcare resources at its disposal.
