La forza del destino premieres in Mallorca

La forza del destino premieres in Mallorca as part of the XXXVIII Temporada de Ópera del Teatre Principal de Palma (38th Opera Season of Palma’s Teatre Principal). The Consell de Mallorca explained this Tuesday that Giuseppe Verdi’s great opera will be performed on the 28th of February and the 1st and 3rd of March, with Alessandra di Giorgio and Francesco Pio Galasso in the leading roles.

The Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained that this is “one of the highlights of the season”: a title that will be performed for the first time in the 38 editions of the cycle. La forza del destino will open on Wednesday 28 February at 8 pm, and can also be seen on Friday 1 March and Sunday 3 March at 6 pm. The staging is a production of the Teatro Sociale in the Italian town of Rovigo.

With musical direction by Gianluca Marcianò and stage direction by Pier Francesco Maestrini, this celebrated Verdi title features the voices of Francesco Pio Galasso (Don Alvaro), Damiano Salerno (Don Carlo di Vargas), Alessandra Di Giorgio (Donna Leonora), Ketevan Kemoklidze (Preziosilla), Alessandra Di Giorgio (Donna Leonora), Ketevan Kemoklidze (Preziosilla), Simón Orfila (Padre Guardiano), Toni Marsol (Fray Melitone), Jordi Fontana (Mastro Trabuco), Vega Escribano (Curra), Joan Miquel Muñoz (Alcade) and Pablo López (Marchese di Calatrava, chirurgo). It should also be noted that the large cast of soloists is completed by the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Islas Baleares and the Coro del Teatro Principal, conducted by Francesc Bonnín.

Giuseppe Verdi wrote La forza del destino for the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre (now the Mariinsky Theatre) in St. Petersburg, where it premiered in November 1862. It is an opera in four acts, with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the novel Don Álvaro o la fuerza del destino by the Spaniard Ángel de Saavedra, better known as the Duke of Rivas.

The action takes place in Spain and Italy, in the middle of the 18th century, and revolves around the forbidden relationship between Leonor, daughter of the Marquis of Calatrava, and Don Alvaro, a young nobleman from South America who is discriminated against because of his origin, given that he has “mulatto blood”. Circumstances will force Mr. Alvaro to commit acts against his will, which will lead to a tragic outcome. A drama of love, death and revenge that culminates in a tragic way, with destiny as another character in the plot.

La forza del destino, over time, has gained a “bad reputation” due to unfortunate circumstances and accidents at its premiere in St. Petersburg and the death on stage in 1960 at the Metropolitan in New York of the baritone Leonard Warren. In fact, despite its great musical quality, La forza del destino is not among the most performed operas in history.
