The Government of the Balearic Islands presents the program of the Day of the Balearic Islands

The Minister of Presidency and Public Administration, Antònia Maria Estarellas, presented this Wednesday at the Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca, in Palma, the program of activities organized on the occasion of the Day of the Balearic Islands 2024, which will take place in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera from February 29 to March 3 under the slogan “Som el que estimam – Estimam el que som” (We are what we love – We love what we are).

Day of the Balearic Islands

Estarellas has informed that, in total, 258 children’s, sports, participatory, gastronomic and cultural activities will be held, of which 185 will take place in Mallorca (144 in Palma and 43 in the part forana), 45 in Menorca, 20 in Ibiza and 5 in Formentera. The budget of the Government for the organization of the Day of the Balearic Islands has been 519,000 euros, maintaining the agreements with the councils of Menorca and Ibiza, which have received 30,000 euros each, and Formentera, with 12,000 euros, so that they can organize those activities they consider most appropriate. In addition, and to extend the day, agreements of up to 2,000 euros have been signed with 23 municipalities of Mallorca to develop their activities. As the main novelty, Councilor Estarellas explained that the Plenary of the Council of the Balearic Communities Abroad, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, has been made to coincide with such an important date. In this sense, he has put in value “the great work done by every one of the Balearic Houses that struggle daily so that the roots of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera continue to live miles away from the archipelago”. The Plenary of the Council of the Balearic Communities Abroad will be on February 28th at the Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca and will be attended by 21 representatives of Balearic houses.

The program of events for the Day of the Balearic Islands will open the following day, February 29, with the presentation of the Ramón Llull Awards and the Gold Medal of the Government of the Balearic Islands, in the Sa Llotja building.

On March 1, the date on which is celebrated as the official holiday of our autonomous community, the director general of Institutional Relations and the Parliament, Xesca Ramis, has highlighted the celebration of the traditional Market of the Balearic Islands, consisting of about 200 stalls, and will be divided into two spaces: on the one hand, the Traditional Trades Market, which increases by 10% the presence of artisans and will be located in the Passeig de Sagrera (up to Consolat Street), Plaça Drassanes and the sidewalk next to s’Hort del Rei, and, on the other hand, a second space outside the Trades Market, which will include the remaining stretch of Passeig de Sagrera to Sa Feixina, where there will also be a gastronomic sample with a significant presence of regional houses by the commitment of the Government for diversity. In addition, there will be a Fair of Designations of Origin, Protected Geographical Indications and Quality Products of the Balearic Islands with 17 exhibitors between s’Hort del Rei and Parc de la Mar.

Culture, sport… and much more

The government is also committed to culture and sport in the program of activities. Thus, on the one hand, on the 1st there will be a concert at noon in s’Hort del Rei by Tomeu Penya, Bep Marqués & Joss Crespí, Albert Oliva and La Guineu and two shows, one of Menorca horse at Porta Sta. Catalina in the afternoon i “I tú què saps?”, based on the contest “Jo en sé més que tú” of IB3. In addition, there will be 49 workshops of traditional crafts. On Saturday, the 2nd, Jaume Anglada will offer a concert at 8 pm in the Passeig des Born.

As for the sports agenda, programmed in collaboration with the sports federations, Ramis announced the celebration of the XIII Marcha Cicloturista, of 90.5 km, the Gran Premio Govern de les Illes Balears and the Premio Illes Balears de trote in Son Pardo, the XVIII Trofeo Islas Baleares de Piragüismo, the Campeonato de Baleares de Vela, the Campeonato de Natación con Aletas and tournaments of sling shot and chess, among other proposals.

It will also be held the Exhibition of the Government of the Balearic Islands, with the participation of all the ministries of the Government, with stands and activities for all ages in the Parc de la Mar.

In addition, this festival will once again be an opportunity to get to know our institutions more closely, which is why the open days at the Parliament, the Consell de Mallorca, the Palacio de Congresos, Cort or the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera, among others, will also be held.

Minister Estarellas wanted to take advantage of the presentation of the program to thank the State Security Forces and Corps, Local Police, Emergency personnel and EMAYA for their work during the celebration of the Day of the Balearic Islands.

Finally, the Government has chosen the official holiday of our autonomous community to present its new visual identity.
