The Consell de Mallorca reactivates the sports programme for 2024. Today, the Counsellor de Medi Ambient, Medi Rural i Esports, Pedro Bestard, signed an agreement at the Iberostar Cristina hotel in Palma with nine hotel chains and holiday camp establishments, in which the Department will hold the “Estades esportives” for families and senior citizens in 2024.
This event marks the start of the programme, which aims to encourage family sports and promote active local tourism based on sport, a format in which the Consell de Mallorca was a pioneer on the island.
The Consell launched the “Sports Stays” 10 years ago, in 2013. Since then, the very popular programme has grown exponentially to 28,408 participants, taking into account that for two seasons it was minimised by covid-19.
Bestard stressed that “the growth of the Consell de Mallorca’s sports days has been proportional to the demand and, if in 2013, it started with 1,500 places, in 2024 it will reach 8,000 participants, 6,000 in the hotels and 2,000 children in Acampaesport”. In addition, he added that “we want to expand and regularise stays for the elderly, so that they have their Imserso Mallorcan, an outing with a plus of activity, which for them is health and social life”.
The event was attended on behalf of the FEHM by Pedro Marín, member and president of the Playa de Palma Hotel Association. In his speech, Marín expressed “his gratitude to the Consell de Mallorca for continuing to collaborate with the FEHM in this initiative, the purpose of which is to promote local tourism through sport”. Marín highlighted “the constant growth of the programme, both in terms of the number of participating companies and the number of families benefiting from it”.
Furthermore, the FEHM representative underlined the importance of public-private collaboration in effective programmes such as this one, pointing out that “the hotel sector has been offering offers linked to sport for years, which have contributed to extending the tourist season”.
