Scheduled surgical operations in public hospitals increased by 1,420
In terms of specialist consultations, hospitals recorded a total of 116,518 first consultations in January and February of this year, a figure that represents an increase of 8.9% compared to the 106,949 recorded in 2023. In this regard, the Health Service has been working for months on different lines of action to improve waiting lists, such as increasing routine activity. In the case of outpatient consultations, overtime went from 21,035 first visits in the first two months of last year to 24,951 this year.
Emergencies also increased compared to 2023. While the first two months of last year saw a total of 122,424 emergencies, this year the figure was 127,137, an increase of 3.8 %.
The healthcare management of the Health Service stresses that since the introduction of the measures of the Comprehensive Waiting List Plan, thanks to the efforts of all the professionals involved in the management of the same, it has been possible to improve the indicators from which they started in December. The surgical delay has been reduced by 18 days and the consultation delay by 9 days. At the same time, there has been a reduction of more than 8,000 registrations of patients with more than 60 days and 800 registrations of patients with more than 180 days.
These results are the result of the coordinated work of all the professionals (not only healthcare professionals) involved in the management of the lists, including the various hospital and primary care managers, the heads and coordinators of the medical and surgical services, the admissions services and the management and services professionals.
On the other hand, the health care management also particularly highlights the work carried out by the hospital emergency services, which have collaborated in maintaining the extraordinary levels of activity in consultations, cabinets and operating theatres. With their excellent involvement and professionalism at times of high emergency department frequency, they have worked intensively, collaborating and enabling the objectives set to be achieved, which have had an impact on improving patient accessibility to healthcare resources.
