The Board of Directors of the Balearic Islands Agricultural and Fisheries Guarantee Fund (FOGAIBA), chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, has approved expenditure for a direct subsidy to the Balearic Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds. This aid, amounting to 150,000 euros, which is 20,000 euros more than last year (15% more), is earmarked for the organisation’s operating costs up to 2024.

The FOGAIBA Board of Directors approved a grant of 150,000
In this sense, the operating expenses that are subsidised are rents and royalties, transport, insurance, banking and similar services, supplies and other services related to the provision of its functions. Also eligible for subsidy are regional and local government taxes and personnel costs: wages and salaries and social security obligations, among others.
Councillor Joan Simonet emphasised that “the services offered and the representative function carried out by the Balearic Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds is fundamental to the proper functioning of the sector. In addition to defending the interests of the sector itself, it is the link between the Government and the different fishermen’s guilds of the Balearic Islands.
For all these reasons, given its unique nature, the public and social interest of its actions as a body for consultation and collaboration with the Administration to promote and encourage fishing interests, the Directorate General for Fisheries states that the Federation meets the requirements to be able to receive this subsidy.
It should be emphasised that the Balearic Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds, a non-profit corporation, is the only one in the Balearic Islands, as there is no other professional fishing federation, and its main function is to represent all the guilds in the Balearic Islands. Furthermore, the Fisheries Act stipulates that there must be an autonomous federation in which all the cofradias of the Balearic Islands can be integrated.
