The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment immobilises several food products from outside the Balearic Islands

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, through the Agri-Food Quality and Control Service of the Directorate General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Produce, has immobilised several food products from outside the Balearic Islands for being out of date. Specifically, two inspection reports were drawn up in a distribution establishment for non-compliance with the regulations. It should be stressed that this action is part of the control plan that the Directorate General carries out on a routine basis.

Among the products that have been seized for being out of date are different types of cheese, sausages, meat preparations, bread and other flour derivatives, as well as sauces and condiments. All the foodstuffs that have been immobilised come from the Spanish mainland and third countries.

In view of this new action, the director general of Agri-Food Quality and Local Produce, Joan Llabrés, stressed once again that “these ex-officio controls are essential to prevent bad practices, which represent unfair competition and consumer fraud. One of our main objectives is to protect the legitimate interests of the sector’s agents and consumers”.

However, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment reminds us that breaches of the current regulations can lead to administrative sanctions. In the case of serious infringements, the penalties range from 3,000 to 15,000 euros or five times the value of the product.
