Photovoltaic solar panels will be installed on the buildings of the Bombers de Mallorca to minimise CO2 emissions and reduce electricity consumption.

The Consell de Mallorca, through the Department of Finance and Public Function, will invest €115,000 to improve energy efficiency in the fire stations of the Bombers de Mallorca. This action, which is part of the Consell de Mallorca’s Master Plan for Energy Saving and Fleet, follows the firm commitment of the island institution to achieve the objectives and commitments of the EU with the 2030 target, as well as to modernise the infrastructure, the vehicle fleet and the equipment of the emergency service.

115.000 € to improve the energy efficiency of fire stations

This initiative aims to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, minimise CO2 emissions and increase the penetration of renewable energies in the assets of the Consell de Mallorca in the production of 50 kWp in total. Therefore, photovoltaic solar panels will be installed on the roofs of the buildings. The first park to receive these improvements will be the one in Alcúdia, which already has the project drawn up and will soon go out to tender. The next park to receive the investment will be the one in Sóller.

“With this investment, we want to improve the energy efficiency of the fire stations. Not only to reduce CO2 emissions, improve the impact and be more respectful from an environmental point of view but also to reduce the energy expenditure of the park. All to continue improving the infrastructure of the Bombers de Mallorca, a primary objective for the Consell de Mallorca,” said the Minister of Finance and Public Function, Rafel Bosch.

These modifications follow the reference model of the new fire stations of the Bombers de Mallorca, which optimises different variables such as the construction system, operational capacity, energy aspects and equipment to be more environmentally friendly. This model has been followed in the complete refurbishment of the Manacor Fire Station and the project for the new Santanyí Fire Station.

During this legislature, the Consell de Mallorca has strengthened its commitment to the Bombers de Mallorca, with the renovation and improvement of the infrastructure, vehicles and equipment of the emergency service.

The island institution is already working on a general firefighter infrastructure plan to modernise the facilities of the existing fire stations and to provide them with the necessary resources, both in terms of vehicles and equipment. The complete refurbishment of the Manacor fire station is in its final phase, the project for the new Santanyí fire station has already been approved and the service will be regrouped in the future headquarters in Marratxí.

On the one hand, the Bombers de Mallorca have modernised their fleet with two new vehicles, two light urban pumps (highly versatile units designed to intervene in urban fires and traffic accident rescues) that are more efficient and technological, complementing the firefighters’ current fleet and providing them with better tools to deal with any emergency.
On the other hand, the island’s Emergency Department has completely renewed the protective uniforms used by the Bombers de Mallorca during firefighting operations in confined spaces. This equipment is designed with multiple layers that provide the complete protection required by firefighters in structural fire situations.

In addition, the Bombers de Mallorca have made a firm commitment to continuous training and specialisation of the corps. In 2023 they reached a record number of training activities, with 156 exercises in one year. Almost 200 members of the corps have received this training, involving more than 900 hours.
