€515,000 were approved for women in African and Asian countries
The Consell de Govern has authorised the Regional Minister for Families and Social Affairs to award three direct grants totalling €515,000 for projects benefiting women in two African countries, Morocco and Senegal, and in one Asian country, Lebanon.
Two of the direct grants are in favour of the United Nations Agency for Women (UN Women), dedicated to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The first, with an amount of 115,000 €, is to carry out the project “Support for women in agriculture and sustainable development PAF/AGRIFED-EXTENSION” in Senegal in 2024. It has a duration of twelve months and aims at the economic empowerment of women in the South of Senegal by improving their access to land and productive resources for climate-resilient agriculture. The project will strengthen 7,000 women farmers in Ziguinchor through access to production techniques, processing and technology for climate-resilient agricultural production. This project is the third phase of the 2022 pilot project.
The other grant in favour of the United Nations Agency for Women (UN Women) has an amount of 100,000 € and is to carry out the project “Support for the economic inclusion of women working in the fisheries sector, Tangier – Tetouan – Al Hoceima region, Morocco”. It will last for one year and aims to support 500 fisherwomen by giving them access to product certification and marketing, financial services, the acquisition of equipment for the production and marketing of marine products, and capacity-building services for the operational and financial management of cooperatives.
Finally, the third of the direct subsidies is in favour of UNHCR Spain. It has an amount of 300,000 € and is to carry out the project entitled “Prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence among Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in the governorates of Beirut and Mount Lebanon, Lebanon”.
This project has a planned duration of twelve months and aims to prevent and respond to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) among the Syrian refugee and asylum seeker population, and discrimination of women and girls in accessing essential resources, in the Governorates of Beirut and Mount Lebanon (including the districts of Beirut, Jbeil, Kesrwane, Matn, Baadba, Aley and Chouf), Lebanon.
