Consell de Mallorca and Ecovidrio

The Consell de Mallorca and Ecovidrio, the non-profit organisation in charge of recycling glass containers throughout Spain, have managed to recover 57,186 kg of glass containers, thanks to the fifth edition of the “Los Peque Recicladores” campaign, the aim of which was to raise awareness among schoolchildren about the importance of recycling glass containers.

The initiative, which ran from 1 March to 30 April, involved a total of 8,730 schoolchildren aged between 6 and 12 from 37 primary schools.

The second vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, and the area manager of Ecovidrio, Roberto Fuentes, presented the prizes to the three winning schools: CEIP Nova Cabana in Marratxí, CEIP Colònia de Sant Jordi in Ses Salines and CEIP Sant Domingo in Santanyí.

The event, which took place in the audience hall of the Consell de Mallorca, was also attended by the Councillor for Education of the Town Council of Marratxí, José Francisco Ferrá; the Councillor for the Environment of the Town Council of Santanyí, Bàrbara Xamena; the Councillor for Education of the Town Council of Ses Salines, Patricia Mesquida; as well as representatives of the winning schools.

The councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports emphasised that the campaign has been “a success” and thanked all the schools for their participation in this initiative, which “rewards recycling and reinforces our commitment to the environment”.

“The basis of learning is in childhood, which is why these campaigns in schools are especially important, so that students become aware of the importance of reducing waste production and protecting our environment,” said Pedro Bestard.

Thus, in the vicinity of all the schools, a green container was decorated with the image of the campaign and personalised with the name of the school. The school that collected the most kilograms of glass per primary school pupil in each category, through this recycling point, would be the winner of the competition, with a prize of 1,000 euros for each category to spend on school or sports equipment
