The Paediatric Pneumology Unit at Son Espases

Five paediatricians, four nurses and two assistants work in the Paediatric Pneumology Unit at Son Espases. They attend paediatric patients, and carry out inpatient care and outpatient follow-up in outpatient clinics. They also respond to inter-consultations from other units of the Paediatric Service of Son Espases and other hospitals in the Balearic Islands. The Pneumology Unit also provides support for prenatal information and the transition to adult units and performs cystic fibrosis screening tests.

During 2023, there were 333 admissions and 1,259 stays at Son Espases by the Paediatric Pneumology Unit. In addition, they carried out 760 first consultations, 3,146 subsequent consultations and around 2,000 office tests (bronchoscopies, pulmonary function tests, fibroendoscopic studies, etc.). Together with the Home Hospitalisation Service, they also attended and monitored patients by telephone from their homes.

The paediatricians who are members of the Paediatric Pneumology Unit participate in several interdisciplinary committees at Son Espases, such as the Sleep Committee, the Asthma and Allergy Committee, the Pulmonary Hypertension Committee and the Cystic Fibrosis Committee. They take part in refresher or continuing education courses for specialists in paediatric pneumology, paediatrics, paediatric surgery, etc. In addition, two of the paediatricians on the team are associate professors at the UIB and all five are members of different research groups.

The accreditation as a High Complexity Unit with excellence granted by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery is a leap in quality for the Hospital Universitario Son Espases.
