The jury of the new Mallorca Youth Awards of the Consell de Mallorca

The awards ceremony will take place this Wednesday, 29th May, at 6 p.m., in the plenary hall of the Palau del Consell. Specifically, the participating schools were IES Emili Darder; IES Joan Alcover; IES Josep Maria Llompart; IES Son Cladera; IES Mossèn Alcover; IES Esporles; IES Clara Hammel; Lluís Vives; Sant Francesc; Sant Josep Obrero and Ágora Portals International School. The jury was made up of the winners of the Mallorca Literary Creation Awards 2023: Neus Nadal Parès, Miquel Vidal Bosch, Pere Perelló Nomdedéu, Àgata Gil Capeta and Núria Figueras Adell.

This is the first edition of the Mallorca Joven Awards, which are worth 2,400 euros and are aimed at students in the third and fourth years of ESO and baccalaureate at any school on Mallorca: “we want to promote creativity in written expression and strengthen language skills among students in ESO and baccalaureate at any school on the island,” explained Galmés.

He also recalled that the aim is to raise awareness of the rondalles among schoolchildren, so the works submitted must include some of the following words: aperduar, braverol, vinclar, brufar, tumbaga, gínjol, esclafit, regiró, esplugar, tudar, vega or jaç. In short, to raise awareness of the island’s culture among young people, the president of the Consell insisted: “it is important that the students of Mallorca know our roots, our own language and the lexicon of the rondalles”.

Categories

There are four categories: two for narrative and two for poetry. In the narrative, there are two prizes: Joana E., in commemoration of the novel by Maria-Antònia Oliver, to whom, by the way, the Consell de Mallorca has just dedicated a library in Binissalem, and Bearn, in recognition of Llorenç Villalonga.

As for poetry, the categories are Pi de Formentor, since next year it will be 150 years since it was written by Costa i Llobera, and Balanguera, to be the island’s official.

Awards

The Consell de Mallorca will recognise each of the four categories with two awards: the finalists will receive 250 euros and the winners 350 euros. In addition, there will also be added prizes for the schools that have submitted the most nominations in the form of tickets to Palma’s Teatre Principal and activities from the Consell de Mallorca’s Catalogue of Cultural Activities (CACIM).

Finally, the Consell de Mallorca will also present different prizes to the teachers who have been in charge of tutoring the winning entries: a set of books, two tickets to the theatre and a weekend in a refuge.
