The ‘Serra de Tramuntana Learning and Service’ programme

Around one hundred teachers from 17 schools in Mallorca shared their experiences and presented the projects they have developed this year using the ‘Serra de Tramuntana Learning and Service’ methodology, jointly promoted by the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium, an agency of the Consell de Mallorca, and the Directorate General for Teaching Staff and Concerted Centres of the Balearic Islands Government’s Department of Education and Universities.

In total, 40 educational centres, almost 300 registered teachers and 2,700 students have participated in the ‘ApS’ programme this year. It is an active and participatory methodology that combines learning and service processes, where children work based on real needs. The programme is also an opportunity to discover the Serra de Tramuntana as an area full of historical, heritage, cultural and natural resources and values, and to reinforce a sense of belonging.

The Natura and Heritage classroom in the botanical garden of the Lluc monastery today hosted the end-of-year conference for the ‘Serra de Tramuntana Learning and Service’ (‘ApS’) program, held with the participating schools for the second and third years. The Serra de Tramuntana island director, Antoni Solivellas, inaugurated the event and thanked the teachers for their commitment ‘to this educational methodology, which has an impact on the conservation of the cultural landscape and allows the children to experience the Serra de Tramuntana, while at the same time generating reflection on the need to preserve its values and to spread the word among their families and friends. Rafel Maura, head of the Ongoing Teacher Training Service of the Balearic Islands Government’s Directorate General for Teaching Staff and Concerted Centers, also took part in the event. In addition to the projects on display, the teachers were given a guided tour of the Lluc botanical garden with the landscape technician in charge, Milan Alcántara, and another tour of the Lluc mill with the Consell de Mallorca’s heritage expert, Biel Ordinas.

The CEIPs Llorenç Riber, Mestre Colom, Son Basca, Es Molinar and Verge de Lluc; the state schools Ramon Llull, Monti-sion and La Purísima; the cooperative Es Liceu and the secondary schools of Sineu, Manacor, Sant Marçal, Santa Maria, Inca, Emili Darder, Porto Cristo and Port d’Alcúdia took part in today’s event. Public and state-subsidised schools in Mallorca can now apply to join the ‘ApS’ programme for the next school year, through the Teacher Training Centre, which for the first time will also be open to adult education and vocational training centres.
