Water reserves in the Balearic Islands stand at 52% in May, with the whole archipelago in a pre-alert situation

AEMET data indicate that May was dry in terms of rainfall, with an average of 18.2 l/m² compared to the historical average of 31.9 l/m².

Water reserves in the Balearic Islands stood at 52% in May, a decrease of 1% compared to the previous month, and 7 percentage points below the same period last year, when reserves stood at 59%. This situation reflects a need for continued vigilance and prudent management of water resources.

In terms of the evolution of the index, eight of the ten Demand Units (DU) have registered a decrease in their reserves: Artà, Manacor-Felanitx, es Pla, Palma-Alcúdia, Tramuntana Nord, Tramuntana Sud, Eivissa and Formentera. One UD has remained stable, Menorca, while the UD de Migjorn has experienced an increase in its reserves.

100% of the territory remains in a pre-alert situation, with no changes in the scenario expected in the short term. The overall situation of the demarcation is 0.433, a lower figure than last year (0.512) and two years ago (0.535). In terms of the percentage of reservations per island, Mallorca has dropped from 55% to 53%, Menorca from 52% to 51% and Eivissa from 37% to 36%.

AEMET data indicate that May has been dry in terms of rainfall, with an average of 18.2 l/m² compared to the historical average of 31.9 l/m². By islands, Menorca had a normal month with 22.4 l/m² compared to its historical average of 26.3 l/m²; Mallorca was dry with 20.1 l/m² compared to its historical average of 34.4 l/m²; and Eivissa and Formentera had a very dry month with only 2.2 l/m² and 2.0 l/m² respectively, compared to their historical averages of 23.6 l/m² and 17.1 l/m².

The year-on-year analysis of rainfall shows that the Balearic Islands have reached 79% of the expected average, with Mallorca at 80%, Menorca at 80% and the Pitiusas at 65%.

In terms of temperatures, the month of May was warm, with an average temperature of 18.6°C, which represents an anomaly of 0.5°C above normal.
