The Regional Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Guardia Civil, detects the presence of expired products in three food establishments
The Guardia Civil, in collaboration with inspectors from the Regional Ministry of Health, has carried out Operation Quick-Frozen, aimed at controlling the marketing of products with an expired best-before date.
As a result of a police investigation, it was discovered that products with an expired best-before date were being sold in different food establishments in Mallorca. Therefore, last week several joint inspections were carried out in various establishments related to the food industry (production, distribution and sale), in hotels and catering establishments.
The first inspection occurred at a company responsible for the refrigerated storage and distribution deep-frozen foodstuffs, where more than 14 pallets of products whose best-before and use-by dates had been exceeded were immobilised and sealed. In addition, they lacked the necessary documentation for the traceability of these products, which led to the suspension of the distribution activity.
The second inspection was carried out in a hotel establishment where 8 pallets of products whose best-before date had expired were found, immobilised and sealed.
The last inspection took place in an establishment whose activity is dedicated to the cutting, packaging and cold storage of fresh meat products. It was found that the cold store was broken and had not been working for months, using a trailer on a refrigerated freezing platform for this purpose, and was therefore sealed.
For all of the above, the owners of these shops and food establishments have been proposed for sanctions under Law 17/2011 on Food Safety and Nutrition. The infringements detected could be classified as serious or minor. The penalties established by this law are up to 5,000 euros for minor offences and up to 20,000 euros for serious offences.
