Pau, the large recycled wood sculpture reflects on the vulnerability of the Tramuntana mountain range
The project was created at the initiative of the Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Consortium, an agency of the Consell de Mallorca, to raise public awareness of the adverse situations suffered by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range as a result of climate change. The sculpture is also a tribute by the author to all the road fatalities in Mallorca. Located in the car park of the So n’Amer refuge in Escorca, it is the torso and face of a man wearing a straw hat, and the title honours a friend of the sculptor, Pau Vidal Serra, who died in a traffic accident.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, during the unveiling of the work, explained that ‘this sculpture makes us reflect on the vulnerability of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and the adverse situations it is suffering due to climate change. The president added that the work ‘makes us reflect on the vulnerability of human beings, both in the face of climate change and on the roads,’ and that ‘there is no better way, more delicate and more emotional than this, to remember the people who have lost their lives on the roads.
The author of the work is Mallorcan Marcos Torandell, who has had the support of the international artists Marta Fresneda and Gabriel Muñoz to design and model the sculpture. This work is part of the awareness-raising project ‘Divergent’ with which the artist seeks a change of perspective. ‘Pau is the artistic response to a natural disaster in the Tramuntana mountains. The piece is based on recycling as a sculptural material and places humanity at the centre of the great challenges we face as a society,’ Torandell explained during the opening ceremony.
