It will be held from the 30th of September to the 6th of October to raise awareness of the importance of conserving this deeply-rooted cultural heritage on the island.

The Consell de Mallorca is celebrating European Dry-stone Heritage Week with a programme of activities to be held between the 30th of September and 6th of October in different parts of the island. An introductory course in Galatzó, a guided excursion along the Dry-stone Route and a volunteer day complete the offer promoted by the Department of the Environment.

This initiative is promoted by the international association European Dry-stone Network (REPS), of which the Consell de Mallorca is a member, and aims to raise public awareness of the importance of conserving this cultural heritage that is so deeply rooted on the island, as well as to disseminate and preserve a craft technique that was used for years in Mallorca to cultivate the hillsides, mark out properties and fields, and to adapt an extensive network of paths, some of which form part of the Dry-stone Route.

The Consell de Mallorca organises the European Dry-stone Heritage Week with three activities: an introductory course in Galatzó, an excursion and a volunteer day

The Second Vice-president and Minister of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, explained that the celebration of this European Dry-stone Heritage Week responds to ‘the firm commitment of his Department to the promotion and protection of this traditional construction technique, which forms part of the island’s landscape and represents a great cultural and heritage wealth that must be preserved’.

In this context, the XVI Curso de iniciación a la construcción de marges will be held, which this year will take place in the public estate of Galatzó (Calvià). The course will begin on Friday 4th October, with a two-hour theory session, and will be completed with practical sessions on 5th, 19th and 26th October and 2nd November. This activity is organised by the Department of the Environment, Rural Environment and Sports and the Calvià Town Hall.

Guided excursion through the snow houses of the Tramuntana mountain range

Furthermore, the Consell de Mallorca invites you to discover the most emblematic snow itinerary in the Tramuntana mountain range. To this end, on Saturday the 5th of October, it has organised an excursion to the Ses Voltes d’en Galileu path in Escorca, which forms part of the Dry Stone Route, led by cultural guide Joan Carles Palos Nadal.

The excursion takes place in a setting of great scenic and environmental value, in which two imposing snow wells, restored by the island institution, and their complementary constructions stand out: the Son Macip snow house and the En Galileu snow house.
