During this year, the number of operations performed at the reference hospital has increased by 8.3% compared to last year and has reached 19,756 interventions.

This year, the Son Espases University Hospital will invest around five million euros in the technological renovation of six operating theatres. This is the first phase of a transformation that will affect the entire surgical area and will be carried out progressively over the next few years. Son Espases currently has twenty-four operating theatres, four of which are used for major outpatient surgery. There are also three more at the Hospital Virgen de la Salud.

The work, which is expected to be completed within a month, began this week with the work before the installation of the new equipment. They consist of emptying the six operating theatres, transferring part of the current technology to other areas and carrying out improvement works, such as renovation of the floor and lighting, among others.

Son Espases invests five million euros in technological renovation of the surgical area

Seven high-performance surgical tables; seven surgical arches; seven anaesthesia machines; seven endoscopy towers; two surgical microscopes; seventeen bone cutting motors; six double-arm surgical lights; six surgical imaging systems for endoscopy and laparoscopy with twelve 4K 3D screens; four ICU critical patient transport and resuscitation stretchers [ATB2] with defibrillator, respirator and monitoring; a monitoring room; an integration and image recording system; a surgical imaging integration and recording system; a surgical imaging system for endoscopy and laparoscopy; and a monitoring room; an integration and image recording system; four transport stretchers for critical ICU and Resuscitation [ATB2] patients with defibrillator, ventilator and monitoring; a monitoring room; an image integration and recording system; a surgical table allowing synchronised movements with the Da Vinci robot and a fluorescence system for complex oncological surgeries in gynaecology and plastic surgery.

For the duration of the works, the Hospital has implemented a contingency plan to minimise the impact on care due to the reduction in the number of operating theatres available. Maximum priority will be given to the most complex procedures and to interventions in the specialities in which Son Espases is the hospital of reference. In addition, a prioritisation system has been established, and more morning and afternoon sessions have been set aside to operate on oncology patients, preferential patients and those who have been awaiting surgery for more than 180 days. During these weeks, complex surgeries will be carried out in the major outpatient surgery operating theatres, while lower priority and less complex procedures will be referred to other collaborating centres. At the same time, other areas have been set up for low-complexity surgical procedures. The activity of all available care areas will be maintained during morning and afternoon hours.

This renovation involves a very complex logistical planning and circuit design to renovate the six operating theatres without affecting the surgical care activity and is possible thanks to the effort and work of all the professionals involved.

The number of surgeries increases and the time to undergo surgery is shortened

Since the beginning of the year, the professionals at Son Espases have performed 19,756 surgeries, a figure that represents an increase of 8.3% over the previous year. The increase in activity is proof of the excellent surgical planning work carried out to optimise resources in the morning and afternoon hours in order to be able to operate on the maximum number of patients possible.

The increase in the number of operations performed has led to a reduction in the surgical waiting list. Specifically, in the last year, the number of patients awaiting surgery has decreased by 10.38%, the number of patients waiting more than 180 days for surgery has been reduced by 25.11%, and the average time to undergo surgery has been shortened by almost 22 days.
