This project is the first step towards the future installation and restoration of the oldest Neapolitan nativity scene in Europe.

The Consell de Mallorca has already begun restoration work on the cave of the Nativity scene of La Sang, an intervention of great heritage importance that comes after five years in which the cave has been propped up while awaiting this essential intervention.

The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained this morning that this project represents a first step towards the future installation and restoration of the oldest Neapolitan nativity scene in Europe. Roca recalled that it is a work of great artistic and historical value that has been in storage since 2015 awaiting restoration for its preservation and public exhibition.

‘The current intervention focuses on the structural part of the cave, which is not visible but is essential to ensure the safety and stability of the space,’ explained the vice-president and councillor.

The main tasks now being carried out are the consolidation of the structure, to guarantee the stability of the entire enclosure; new lighting has been designed to enhance the space and the figures without compromising the restoration work; the replacement of the platform on which the figures were placed and the incorporation of new beams, among other actions. In addition, Roca explained, an emergency extraction plan has been put in place: ‘we have developed a protocol for the safe and efficient extraction of the figures and works of art in the event of an emergency, ensuring the preservation of all the valuable elements of the nativity scene’.

These works are being carried out by the Consell de Mallorca with its resources, with the Historical Heritage Brigade, and are expected to be completed in approximately four months.

The Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, stressed the importance of this intervention: ‘This is a fundamental intervention to preserve one of the jewels of our heritage, a project that is finally underway after years of waiting and lack of resources’. Roca emphasised the Consell de Mallorca’s desire to fulfil its commitments to the heritage and guarantee that the Nativity Scene of the Blood will be accessible to future generations.
