Palma, September 11, 2025 — The President of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens, announced that the regional government and Palma City Council are already working on technical studies for the extension of the Palma metro line to Son Espases University Hospital.

Speaking during the second day of the general policy debate, Prohens explained that the project will link Plaza España and the Intermodal Station with the main hospital of the Balearic Islands, significantly improving mobility, accessibility, and sustainability across the metropolitan area.

The government is preparing a new feasibility and planning study to formally approve the project in 2026. Prohens emphasised that this long-awaited extension represents a major step forward in public transport infrastructure and fulfils a long-standing promise to modernise the Balearic railway network.

She noted that although the project had been proposed years ago, it was never implemented, and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to other rail initiatives, such as the Levant train and a new state railway investment agreement.

Prohens also announced a €360 million increase in the regional non-financial spending ceiling, reaching €6.924 billion for 2026, which will enable greater public investment in healthcare, education, housing, and public transport.

Among the Government’s key achievements, Prohens highlighted the tax equality for self-employed workers, the new work-life balance law, the expansion of the public transport system with €150 million more for the TIB, and the new Strategic Residential Projects Law to promote affordable housing.

She also mentioned ongoing initiatives such as the train to Llucmajor, the creation of the Balearic School of Public Safety, and new road improvement agreements with the island councils.

“Our priority is clear — to keep improving public services and the quality of life for the people who live here,” Prohens concluded.
