Son Mir estate in Palma hosted the official opening of the First Conference on Tourism, Enogastronomy and Local Products, a new initiative promoted by the regional government to enhance cooperation between the agricultural sector and the tourism industry in the Balearic Islands. The event is jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment.

The opening ceremony was led by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, accompanied by the Director-General for Tourism, Miquel Rosselló, and the Director of AETIB, Pere Joan Planas.

Taking place on 26 and 27 November, the conference is part of the Balearic Islands’ Enogastronomy Plan, financed by Next Generation EU funds through AETIB. It brings together producers, tourism businesses, chefs, restaurateurs and cooperatives from across the islands to build synergies aimed at developing a more authentic, diversified and sustainable tourism model.

During his speech, Minister Simonet underlined the pivotal contribution of the primary sector to the competitiveness of the Balearic tourism offer. “Visitors come to our islands attracted by the landscapes preserved by farmers and livestock breeders. Now we want to take another step, connecting not only what they see, but also what they can taste,” he said.

Simonet also highlighted the unique value of local products: “We offer grape varieties, vegetables and olives that exist nowhere else, as well as distinctive foods such as the wine made from the Montenegro grape or the red Menorcan cow cheese. These products enrich the visitor experience and directly support the conservation of our landscapes and agriculture.”

The programme features talks, round tables, workshops and a networking area for producers and tourism establishments, to integrate local products more effectively into the Balearic culinary value chain.

With this inaugural edition, the Balearic Government reaffirms its commitment to promoting local products as a strategic element of tourism differentiation and to strengthening the primary sector as a cornerstone of sustainability, quality and territorial identity.
