The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA) has been authorised to extend the electricity supply contract for all its facilities for an additional two months. This extension —from 1 January to 28 February 2026— guarantees uninterrupted service while the new regional energy framework agreement is being finalised.
ABAQUA manages the electricity required for the operation of the high-level potable water network, as well as wastewater treatment and pumping stations throughout the Balearic Islands. In total, the agency oversees 297 electricity supply points, including 235 low-voltage and 62 medium-voltage connections across the archipelago’s hydraulic infrastructure.

ABAQUA extends the electricity supply contract to ensure the continuity of its water infrastructure operations
In November 2024, the electricity framework agreement was awarded to Endesa Energía SAU, and ABAQUA subsequently formalised the contract to cover energy needs during 2025. Later, in September 2025, the contract was updated to incorporate new supply points, while the Central Procurement Office initiated the tendering process for a new framework agreement.
Due to the technical complexity of this procedure, the new system could not be completed in time to take effect before the end of 2025.
To ensure continuity of service, a mandatory two-month extension has been activated, with a maximum budget of €4,568,540.77, VAT included. The necessary funding has already been allocated in ABAQUA’s 2026 budget and authorised in accordance with procurement regulations.
This decision ensures the electrical supply needed to maintain water supply, sanitation and treatment facilities, regarded as essential public services for the proper functioning of the water cycle in the Balearic Islands.
