The unanimous approval by the European Committee of the Regions of the opinion defended by the President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, has been welcomed as a significant endorsement of a tourism model grounded in social sustainability, coexistence and responsible management.
The island’s Tourism Department has highlighted the importance of Europe recognising an approach that shifts the focus from traditional promotion towards greater awareness, regulation and quality of life, a strategy that has guided tourism policy in Mallorca since the beginning of the current term.

Mallorca welcomes European endorsement of a sustainable tourism model focused on coexistence
According to the island’s tourism councillor, José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, the decision adopted in Brussels confirms that “the roadmap launched in 2023 addresses the real challenges faced by Europe’s leading destinations”. He stressed that hearing these principles endorsed at the highest European institutional level reinforces a model that places community well-being and environmental balance at the heart of tourism management.
Rodríguez also emphasised the transition from simply counting visitors to measuring social and environmental well-being, redefining tourism policy as a tool for stewardship rather than marketing alone.
The Tourism Department has underlined the strong alignment between local initiatives and the proposals presented to the European Union. In this context, tourism is seen not as a problem but as a key driver of solutions, provided it is properly managed and aligned with residents’ needs.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with the regional executive to ensure that Mallorca remains both a wonderful place to live and a respectful, high-quality destination to visit.
