Balearic Islands Waste Commission strengthens institutional coordination to improve sustainable waste management

The Balearic Islands Waste Commission has held a new ordinary meeting aimed at strengthening coordination between public administrations and advancing towards a more efficient and sustainable waste management system, in line with European environmental targets.

The meeting was chaired by the Director General for Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change, Diego Víu Domínguez, and included representatives from the Govern de les Illes Balears, the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the Ayuntamiento de Palma, and the Federación de Entidades Locales de las Illes Balears (FELIB).

During the current term, the Waste Commission has been consolidated as a strategic and operational governance body, designed to facilitate institutional cooperation, aligned criteria and coordinated decision-making in a complex area such as waste management.

Key topics discussed included:

  • The inter-island waste transfer agreement between Ibiza and Mallorca
  • Progress in negotiations with Extended Producer Responsibility systems (EPR / SCRAP)
  • Development of sectoral waste management plans
  • Implementation of the landfill and incineration tax

Positive waste management results in 2024

Aggregated waste management data for 2024 show notable improvements across all waste streams:

  • Historic reduction in municipal waste generation: 469 kg per inhabitant, the lowest level in 15 years
  • Increase in separate waste collection:
    • Paper and cardboard: +2.5%
    • Light packaging: +12.8%
    • Organic waste: 69,115 tonnes (+35.7%)
