The municipality of Bunyola is set to undertake a comprehensive revision of its general urban planning framework following the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Consell de Mallorca. The initiative will modernise local planning regulations that have remained largely unchanged for more than four decades.

The agreement was signed by the Minister for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio, and the Mayor of Bunyola, Maria Antònia Serralta, during an official event attended by the Island Director for Urban Planning and Municipal Development, Maria José Frau. The signing marks the launch of a long-overdue process to replace planning regulations dating back to 1982.

Bunyola to update its outdated urban planning framework through a cooperation agreement with Mallorca’s island authorities

The drafting of the new general plan is expected to take a minimum of four years and will be supported by technical and legal assistance from the Planning Service of the Consell de Mallorca, provided at no cost to the local authority. The agreement also allows for an extension if the planning document is still under administrative review at the end of the initial period.

This action forms part of a wider institutional cooperation programme approved in February 2025, aimed at municipalities with populations between 5,000 and 10,000 that lack updated planning instruments or whose regulations no longer comply with current legislation. The programme seeks to equip these towns with modern planning tools that address current social, environmental and territorial needs.

Through this agreement, Bunyola takes a significant step towards establishing a modern, sustainable and legally compliant urban planning framework, laying the foundations for balanced growth and improved quality of life for its residents.
