The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment has ordered the immobilisation of a batch of mini zucchinis imported from South Africa following the detection of labelling irregularities during an inspection at a wholesale fruit and vegetable distribution facility in the Balearic Islands.

The measure was implemented by the Directorate General for Agri-food Quality and Local Products after identifying the absence of mandatory information on the products, including batch numbers and expiration or best-before dates. These details are essential to ensure proper food traceability and safe commercialisation.

Routine inspections of agri-food products, particularly those originating from non-EU countries, are designed to verify compliance with current regulations on quality and labelling. These controls aim to safeguard consumer interests while supporting fair competition within the local agricultural sector.

Enhanced monitoring of imported goods also addresses the need to confirm that all products meet established European standards. Accurate labelling and traceability are fundamental requirements for ensuring transparency and maintaining food safety across the supply chain.

Failure to comply with these obligations may result in the initiation of sanctioning procedures, with fines ranging from €3,000 to €15,000 or up to five times the value of the goods in cases of serious infringements. These actions are part of an ongoing inspection framework focused on strengthening the agri-food system and protecting consumers.
