The ‘Trobades de conversa’ (Som xerraires) programme, promoted by the Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), begins its third cycle of language exchange sessions in March 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen the social use of Catalan by encouraging direct interaction between fluent speakers and learners in informal settings.
The programme is based on the creation of language pairs or small conversation groups, composed of a conversation guide—acting as a linguistic mentor—and one or more learners. Each group commits to holding at least ten one-hour sessions, designed to foster natural and spontaneous oral communication. Participants are supported by structured materials that include suggested topics and activities to facilitate dialogue.

‘Trobades de conversa’ (Som xerraires) launches its third cycle to promote Catalan among native speakers and learners
A key innovation in this new cycle is the introduction of a digital application that streamlines registration processes and enables comprehensive monitoring of each session. After every meeting, participants can provide feedback on their experience, allowing programme coordinators to identify potential issues and ensure continuous improvement.
Programme coordination is carried out through Catalan language centres located in Palma, Inca, Manacor and Ciutadella, in collaboration with the IEB’s Catalan Language Promotion Service, ensuring consistency and effective implementation across different regions.
The initiative is further enhanced by partnerships with cultural organisations that provide complementary activities, creating additional opportunities for participants to use Catalan in real-life contexts and enriching the overall learning experience.
Informational sessions have been आयोजित across several locations throughout March to present the new cycle and introduce the digital tool, reinforcing a participatory approach that encourages community engagement.
The programme stands as a solid framework for improving oral proficiency in Catalan, building learners’ confidence and promoting social cohesion through everyday language use in accessible and dynamic environments.
