Formentera is set to strengthen its agricultural sector starting this October with the launch of its first local olive oil mill, a long-awaited infrastructure that will allow olives to be processed directly on the island. Backed by a public investment of nearly €370,000, the project marks a significant shift in the island’s primary sector.
Until now, local producers had to transport olives to Ibiza for processing, increasing costs and affecting product quality. The new facility will enable full local production, improving efficiency, reducing transport times, and ensuring higher quality standards—key factors in boosting the competitiveness of Formentera’s olive oil.

Formentera to produce local olive oil from October with new mill
Beyond production, the initiative supports a more sustainable and diversified economic model. By strengthening local agriculture and reducing dependency on external processing, the island enhances its resilience and preserves its rural landscape. The project also reinforces the role of agricultural cooperatives as key drivers of cohesion, commercialization, and value creation.
This move aligns with a broader strategy to increase added value through local transformation, improve market positioning, and support long-term sector sustainability. The new olive mill is expected to help Formentera establish a stronger presence in niche markets focused on quality and origin.
The initiative is part of ongoing support policies for the primary sector, including financial aid to offset insularity costs, promote modernization, and encourage new generations of farmers. With this development, Formentera takes a decisive step toward a more competitive and self-sufficient agricultural future.
