The Government of the Balearic Islands has definitively approved amendment number 6 to the Special Development Plan of the Balearic Innovation Technology Park (ParcBit), aiming to adapt this strategic hub to evolving economic, social and infrastructural needs. Promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation, the update introduces key measures to strengthen ParcBit’s role as a driver of innovation.

One of the main changes includes the introduction of housing for workers linked to the technology park, addressing current housing challenges and facilitating mobility for research and technical staff. This measure is designed to enhance accessibility and improve the park’s capacity to attract and retain highly qualified professionals.

The amendment also aligns with the planned extension of the metro line from the University of the Balearic Islands to ParcBit, requiring adjustments to the urban planning framework to ensure compatibility and improve connectivity within the area.

In addition, the range of permitted uses in service zones has been expanded to accommodate new economic activities. The plan removes the previous provision for an energy cogeneration plant, moving towards a more sustainable model, and allows for the establishment of certain specialised industries focused on raw material transformation, distinct from conventional industrial activity.

This planning update forms part of ParcBit’s roadmap towards 2030, which seeks to position the site as one of the leading technological hubs in the Mediterranean. The initiative reinforces its strategic role in innovation, business development and the transformation of the Balearic Islands’ economic model.
