The Menorca Island Council has approved the implementation of a comprehensive forest fire prevention plan covering all eight municipalities of the island. The initiative, carried out through an assignment to TRAGSA, includes forestry actions, improvements to the hydrant network, and the installation of strategic signage to enhance safety and territorial protection.

The project is aligned with local emergency action plans for forest fires and establishes a coordinated intervention across the entire island. It prioritizes both public safety and environmental protection, applying technical and environmental criteria throughout its execution.

Menorca Island Council launches a comprehensive forest fire prevention plan across the island. Forestry actions and land management

The plan includes silvicultural work at different scales, ranging from maintenance of defense infrastructures to interventions in urban areas and zones near isolated buildings. The tasks will mainly consist of pruning, clearing, and shredding vegetation residues, using manual tools and, where appropriate, specialized machinery adapted to local conditions.

Environmental considerations are integrated into all actions. Priority is given to removing highly flammable species, while less combustible vegetation is preserved. Measures are also established to protect sensitive habitats and species, particularly in environmentally significant areas such as natural parks and Natura 2000 sites.

Infrastructure improvements and signage

The initiative also includes upgrades to the public hydrant network in accordance with municipal plans, ensuring adequate water supply in emergency situations. In addition, signage will be installed at key locations, including assembly points and sections of the Camí de Cavalls, following established technical standards.

Investment and phased implementation

The total budget amounts to €2,842,540.89, funded through ITS resources linked to the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Law. The execution timeline includes a first phase in 2026, accounting for 65% of the budget, and a second phase in 2027 focused on maintenance, reinforcement actions, and the installation of hydrants and signage.

This plan strengthens the island’s capacity to prevent and respond to forest fires through a structured and coordinated approach, while also supporting climate adaptation, preserving ecological values, and contributing to the development of the primary sector.
