The Blood and Tissue Bank of the Balearic Islands has paid tribute to around twenty breast milk donor mothers on the occasion of World Human Milk Donation Day during an event held in the gardens of La Misericòrdia in Palma. The initiative recognised the solidarity and commitment of women whose altruistic donations help improve the health and recovery of premature and hospitalised newborns across the Balearic Islands.

The gathering brought together institutional representatives, healthcare professionals, associations supporting families with premature babies, and families who have benefited from donated breast milk. The honoured mothers received commemorative diplomas and gifts in recognition of their essential contribution to ensuring the nutrition of the most vulnerable newborns during their first weeks of life.

The Blood and Tissue Bank of the Balearic Islands pays tribute to breast milk donor mothers and strengthens the solidarity network across the islands

Throughout 2025, the Human Milk Bank registered a total of 85 donor mothers, with 78 women donating milk for the first time. Thanks to this collective effort, 574 litres of breast milk were collected. Nearly 442 litres were successfully processed and passed microbiological safety controls, guaranteeing safe hospital use for newborn infants in need.

During the same year, 364.75 litres of breast milk were distributed to hospitals throughout the Balearic Islands. Most of the milk was allocated to extremely low birth weight newborns weighing less than 1,500 grams who were unable to receive milk from their own mothers. In total, 152 babies benefited from this essential healthcare resource that supports their development and recovery.

As a significant new development in 2026, the Blood and Tissue Bank now includes the first three breast milk donor mothers from Ibiza, an important step towards expanding the solidarity network and improving access to donation programmes across all the islands. Healthcare professionals continue to emphasise the importance of raising public awareness about the need for more donor mothers in order to guarantee this vital resource for the most vulnerable newborns.
