Authorities have expressed their strongest condemnation following two new suspected gender violence killings in the provinces of Girona and Navarra, bringing the number of women killed in Spain in 2026 to 22. The victims were a 32-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her former partner in Girona on May 19 and a 44-year-old woman killed in Navarra on May 16.

In the Girona case, previous gender violence complaints had reportedly been filed against the suspected aggressor, a 48-year-old man. Both crimes have once again placed the fight against violence against women at the centre of institutional and social concern as the number of victims continues to rise this year.

Authorities have conveyed their support and solidarity to the families and close friends of the victims while stressing the urgent need to strengthen prevention measures, victim protection systems and coordination between public administrations in order to prevent further killings. Institutions are also calling for greater social involvement in identifying risk situations and responding quickly to signs of abuse.

Support services for victims of violence against women remain available around the clock through emergency helplines, online assistance channels and specialised legal guidance services adapted to different languages and accessibility needs. Authorities also remind the public that anyone who suspects a case of gender violence can activate emergency and protection resources.

These latest cases once again highlight the seriousness of gender-based violence in Spain and the continuing need for prevention, public awareness and urgent action aimed at protecting women and ensuring an effective response to all forms of violence against women.
