La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre hosted a large-scale cultural celebration on Friday, bringing together nearly one thousand students from schools across Mallorca to commemorate the centenary of the first musical performance of “La Balanguera”. The event formed part of the Alcover Year programme and highlighted the enduring significance of one of the island’s most cherished cultural symbols.

The initiative aimed to strengthen young people’s connection with Mallorca’s language, traditions and cultural heritage through music and collective participation. By involving students from different educational communities, the event promoted awareness of the island’s historical identity while encouraging appreciation for its cultural legacy among future generations.

Institutional representatives attended the celebration, which also coincides with the centenary of poet Joan Alcover’s death and the thirtieth anniversary of “La Balanguera” as the official anthem of Mallorca. Throughout the event, emphasis was placed on the role of the anthem as a unifying symbol capable of bringing together people from different backgrounds through a shared sense of belonging.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was the collective performance of “La Balanguera”, delivered in the emblematic surroundings of La Misericòrdia. Following the musical tribute, participating students raised coloured cards to create a large mosaic depicting the flag of Mallorca, transforming the courtyard into a powerful visual expression of identity, unity and cultural pride.

The celebration involved pupils from nine schools across the island, who took part in an educational and cultural experience designed to reinforce knowledge of Mallorca’s heritage. The impressive mosaic became one of the defining images of the event, symbolising the connection between education, culture and community values.

The programme concluded with a shared gathering among participants, reinforcing the spirit of coexistence and collaboration that characterised the day. Through music, collective participation and cultural engagement, the event successfully honoured a milestone in Mallorca’s history while promoting the preservation and transmission of its cultural heritage to future generations.
