Spain’s Ministry of Equality has condemned the suspected gender-based killing of a 45-year-old woman in the province of Málaga, who was allegedly killed by her former partner on 21 July 2026.
The victim had no children under the age of 18, and there were no previous gender-based violence complaints registered against the alleged perpetrator.
Following confirmation of this case, the number of women killed as a result of gender-based violence committed by a current or former partner in Spain has risen to 36 in 2026. Since official records began in 2003, a total of 1,377 women have been killed as a result of gender-based violence.

Equality Ministry condemns the gender-based killing of a woman in the province of Málaga
The Minister for Equality, Ana Redondo García, and the Government Delegate against Gender-Based Violence, Carmen Martínez Perza, have expressed their strongest condemnation and rejection of this latest suspected femicide and conveyed their support to the victim’s family and friends.
Both officials have stressed the importance of strengthening efforts by institutions, public administrations and society as a whole to prevent violence against women, identify situations of risk and intervene in time to prevent further deaths.
The Ministry of Equality also reminds the public that the 016 service provides information, advice and assistance to victims of all forms of violence against women. The 016 telephone service and its associated support channels operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Information is available on victims’ rights and existing support resources, while legal advice is provided every day between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Assistance is available in 53 languages and includes services adapted for people with disabilities.
In an emergency or situation involving immediate danger, people can contact the emergency services on 112, the National Police on 091 or the Guardia Civil on 062. When making a telephone call is not possible, the ALERTCOPS application can be used to send a geolocated alert to the police.
These assistance services can be accessed not only by victims themselves but also by anyone who is aware of or suspects a case of gender-based violence. Prevention, early detection and the involvement of society as a whole remain essential in the fight against violence against women.
