The Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) has received 898 applications for its 2026 individual financial aid programme aimed at promoting personal autonomy and improving the quality of life of older people in Mallorca. This represents a 31% increase compared with the 684 applications submitted in 2025 and is the highest number ever recorded under this support scheme.
Figures from recent years show a sustained rise in demand. A total of 603 applications were registered in 2024, increasing to 684 in 2025 and reaching 898 in 2026. This represents growth of almost 50% in just two years, demonstrating that the financial assistance is becoming increasingly well known and widely used among Mallorca’s older population.
The 2026 programme will receive the maximum budget allocation established for the scheme, amounting to €375,000. The funding is intended to help eligible residents purchase products and equipment that can improve their independence, safety and ability to carry out everyday activities.

Financial aid for older people’s autonomy reaches a record 898 applications in Mallorca, up 31% from last year
IMAS president and Councillor for Social Welfare Guillermo Sánchez highlighted the significant increase in applications, stressing that one of the main objectives has been to ensure that the financial support effectively reaches the people who need it. The growth recorded over the past two years indicates that more older residents are becoming aware of the programme, recognise its benefits and are making use of the available assistance.
Sánchez also emphasised that the increase in demand reflects a genuine need among Mallorca’s older population. Public resources, he noted, are intended to support practical measures capable of having a direct impact on people’s daily lives by helping them maintain their independence while improving their safety and overall quality of life.
The financial aid is available to people aged 65 and over who are registered as residents in Mallorca. It can be used to cover products designed to support physical or sensory recovery, compensate for functional limitations and make everyday activities easier.
Eligible expenses include hearing aids, glasses, dental and ocular prostheses, wheelchairs, walking frames, adapted beds, patient lifts, safety rails, lifting equipment and shower chairs, as well as other technical aids and mobility products designed to promote greater personal independence.
The application period closed on 27 July. Throughout the submission period, IMAS provided both in-person and telephone assistance for residents requiring information, guidance or help with questions concerning the application process.
The programme forms part of Mallorca’s social welfare policies aimed at strengthening personal autonomy and active ageing while helping older people remain in their usual surroundings for as long as possible under the best possible conditions of wellbeing, safety and quality of life.
