The Council of Mallorca has called on the Government of Spain to unblock and accelerate the musealisation project for the archaeology rooms at the Museum of Mallorca, which remains pending and continues to keep key spaces dedicated to the island’s archaeological heritage closed to the public.

The island institution is urging the Ministry of Culture to make definitive progress on the drafting and subsequent tendering of the museum exhibition project. According to the Council, requests to move the initiative forward have been made since 2023, but the necessary progress to allow the rooms to reopen has yet to be achieved.

Vice-President of the Council of Mallorca and Councillor for Culture and Heritage Antònia Roca has stressed that the island institution is ready to move forward and has called on the Ministry to carry out the actions that fall within its responsibilities. She has also requested a concrete response and a timetable establishing the steps required to unblock the project.

The Museum of Mallorca is the island’s main state-owned museum and houses archaeological collections covering different periods of Mallorca’s history, from prehistoric times through later historical eras. The planned musealisation project is intended to renew the presentation of this heritage and provide visitors with a more accessible interpretation of the collections and their historical context.

The Council’s Culture and Heritage department considers the reopening of these spaces essential to bringing Mallorca’s archaeological heritage closer to the public and ensuring that it can be properly understood and appreciated. Antònia Roca has reiterated the need to bring an end to a situation that has continued for years and has urged the Government of Spain to take the necessary steps so that the museum project can finally move forward and the archaeology rooms at the Museum of Mallorca can reopen to the public.
