Applications are open until 22 November 2026 for farms and food producers wishing to host visits. The programme will provide transport and accompanying support staff for participants.

A programme of 40 free visits to farms and food-processing businesses across the Balearic Islands is being prepared for 2027. The regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment has launched a selection process for 40 agricultural and food production operators, with applications accepted until 22 November 2026.

The initiative will introduce residents to food produced in the islands, the methods used to grow and process it, and the people working in the sector.

Organised through the Directorate-General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products, the programme will form part of the 2025–2027 Local Product Promotion Plan, specifically its measures concerning the domestic market.

Each of the 40 routes will include visits to at least two agricultural or food production businesses. Groups will consist of between 15 and 35 people, with transport and support staff provided free of charge.

The visits are primarily intended for residents taking part through associations, non-profit organisations and other community groups. Some activities may also be made available to the general public where this is consistent with the programme’s objectives.

The current application process concerns businesses interested in hosting visitors. Arrangements for participating groups will be made at a later stage, following the selection of operators.

Balearic Islands to offer 40 free local food production tours in 2027. Which businesses can apply?

The call is open to farms, food-processing companies and food producers operating in the Balearic Islands whose products meet the legal definition of local products.

Producer associations, agricultural transformation companies, food cooperatives and associations of cooperatives are also eligible.

Participating businesses will explain their agricultural or food-processing activities, introduce visitors to their production methods and provide information about where their products can be purchased.

They may also organise tastings or sell products directly to visitors, provided the activities comply with the relevant regulations.

Joan Llabrés, Director-General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products, explained that the visits are intended to help residents understand what is produced in the Balearic Islands, how the food is made and where it is available. The programme also seeks to encourage consumers to identify locally produced food when making their regular purchases.

Visits lasting up to 90 minutes

Each stop at a participating farm or food-processing facility will last between one hour and 90 minutes.

The timetable will be agreed with the selected operators, taking into account production cycles, business availability, weather conditions and the requirements of visiting groups.

Every selected operator is guaranteed at least one visit during the programme.

Host premises must be suitable for receiving groups and meet applicable visitor safety, food safety and civil liability requirements.

Places reserved for individual islands and sectors

The selection criteria include geographical allocations, with eight operator places reserved for Menorca, five for Ibiza and three for Formentera.

The programme also reserves five places for livestock producers, five for fruit and vegetable production and five for food-processing activities other than wine and oil production.

Applications will be assessed using a points-based system.

Factors considered will include priority or preferred agricultural holding status, young farmer status, membership of producer associations or cooperatives, and organic production.

Additional criteria include links to recognised quality designations, the use of Local Product and Direct Sale labels, and the ability to provide tastings or offer products for direct purchase during visits.

Any reserved places that remain unfilled may be reassigned to other applicants in accordance with the selection rules.

Applications must reach the Directorate-General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products by 22 November 2026, inclusive. The call for applications has been published in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB).
