Spain’s Ministry of Equality has condemned the suspected gender-based killing of a 38-year-old woman in the province of Barcelona on 28 October 2026. The victim was the mother of three children, one boy and two girls, all under the age of 18. No previous gender-based violence complaints had been filed against the alleged perpetrator.

Following the confirmation of two cases, the number of women killed as a result of gender-based violence in Spain has reached 44 in 2026. The cumulative figure stands at 1,385 since official records began in 2003.

The number of children left without their mothers as a result of gender-based violence has also increased. A total of 35 minors have been orphaned in Spain so far this year, bringing the figure recorded since 2013 to 545.

Spain’s Minister for Equality, Ana Redondo García, and the Government Delegate for Gender-Based Violence, Carmen Martínez Perza, have condemned the latest killing and expressed their support for the victim’s family and friends.

Both officials have called for continued efforts by public institutions, government authorities and society to prevent further deaths and ensure that action is taken in time to protect women facing gender-based violence.
