Binissalem suspends Vermada 2021

Due to the restrictions in force and its continuous adaptations to the population’s needs, the mayor of Binissalem, Víctor Martí, today reached a consensus with the young people who turn 17 this year, those born in 2004, that the elections for the grape harvesters and their corresponding acts of representation will be suspended.

Last year, the age of potential grape harvesters was raised to 17 years old, making the age one year older than usual to stand for election as grape harvesters.

The actions taken by consensus between the institutions and the young people are as follows:

In 2022, 5 young people will be elected, three girls and two boys born in 2004 and who will be 18 years old in 2022.

In 2022, 5 young people will be elected. 3 girls and 2 boys were born in 2005 and will be 17 years old in 2022.

This doubles the number of grape harvesters, elected by their neighbours. They will have the same representation, which will share the election year with people who have been born the same year that has been affected by Covid.

The main grape harvester and the highest authority of the Vermar Festival will be the most voted grape harvester of those born in 2004 and 2005.

We have other precedents:

In 1969, the festival was represented by 5 women, 5 grape harvesters, so there was no male presence. Their ages ranged from 15 to 17 years old.

In 1970, the festival was represented by 5 women, aged between 17 and 25 years old.

In 1972, the three official grape harvesters were only 3 and their companions were 6 grape harvesters from villages in the region.

From 1991 onwards, two boys joined the group. The tradition continued until before the Pandemic.
