Adaptation of the Artext project to Catalan

The Consell de Govern has authorised direct aid to the UNED to support the adaptation of the ArText project into Catalan. Thus, the Regional Ministry of European Funds, University and Culture will be able to process a grant for a maximum amount of 18,139 euros.

The UNED carries out research projects funded by different public administrations, foundations and entities. One of the results of this collaboration between the UNED and other entities is the ArText Project, the first assisted text generator for the Spanish language that helps to write text genres in specialised fields and texts in plain language.

ArText is a tool available to all citizens (all you need is a device with an Internet connection and the Google Chrome browser), which can be useful for people who have to write texts for the public administration, as well as for public workers or professionals in the fields of medicine, tourism or law. It is also useful for academic writing.

The project to adapt ArText from Spanish to Catalan is structured in two stages. Stage 1 consists of adapting the technological infrastructure of ArText so that new languages can be added, specifically Catalan; allowing the main website to have two language options; to add sections, contents and phraseology of specialised text genres (allegation, cover letter, complaint, claim and application), and to integrate a spellchecker for Catalan into the system.

Stage 2 of the adaptation includes the implementation of linguistic recommendations for Catalan; the addition of sections, contents and phraseology of specialised textual genres in the field of medicine (research article, review article, summary of research article, clinical history and final degree project in medicine), in the field of tourism (travel article, traveller’s blog entry, tourist accommodation regulations, report and business plan) and in the academic field (final degree project in any speciality).

Making available to all citizens a digital tool in Catalan such as this one (an assisted editor that helps to write textual genres in specialised fields, as well as texts in plain language), represents a special contribution to achieving the standardisation and promotion of the use of Catalan as a written language, especially in the fields of public administration, medicine, tourism, law and professional and academic texts.
